Senior User Experience Designer – Interface & interaction design lead for projects in the Global Risk & Operations (formerly Trust & Safety) business unit. Working with product marketing managers in the development of business requirements into design concepts and page flows, and with technical product managers, visual designers, and content writers in executing specific design specs for enhancements and new features. Leading & supporting peers on three long-term development initiatives. Independently building relationships across all product verticals and pushing hard for design consistency across the org, ever-increased focus on the needs and concerns of users, and improved user-centric design processes. Lead User Interface Designer, Edusoft – User interface lead for product development teams in San Francisco, CA and Itasca, IL offices. Worked with product managers in the development of page wireframes, developed prototypes and mockups, and assisted development staff with implementation and platform compatibility solutions for the company's web-based software products. Art & project directed a total application redesign effort, specifying layout patterns, visual design motif, color schemes, CSS styles, and design migration strategy. Established UI guidelines across disparate products. Directly managed one Sr. UI Designer.
User Interface Architect – Design lead for all new product features and enhancements. Developed UI standards for web-based distribution, standalone/installable product, and Outlook client plug-ins. Developed new graphic styles & UI layout patterns. Provided JSP & JavaScript coding support for new projects.
User Interface Architect – Designed new features for the company’s flagship customer support product, QUIQ Connect. Developed a complete set of documented UI standards and templates and with these, led a complete rewrite of more than 300 user-facing screens. Art directed graphic designers in the creation of a new library of product icons and buttons. Created a central repository of HTML-based mockups and components. Contributed to development & documentation of a revised product development lifecycle. Created and conducted usability tests. Counseled Professional Services on browser bugs and advanced UI customization via CSS & DHTML. Developed a one year user experience roadmap.
Site Engineer (Jul. ‘00 – Jan. ‘01) – Developed and maintained Active Server Pages-based internal productivity tools. Participated in site maintenance and new feature integration, including the front-end integration of the Q3 ‘00 Ask.com redesign (see below). Developed & documented the first complete public beta testing process for Ask.com.
Sr. Graphic Designer (Aug. ‘99 – Jul. ‘00) – Redesigned www.Ask.com in Q3 ‘00, developing pencil sketches into mockups into optimized HTML, JavaScript and images, reducing homepage download time by 50%. Established universal navigation across all Ask Jeeves consumer web properties. Defined global CSS styles and typography conventions in collaboration with the Creative Director. Redesigned the Ask Jeeves Shopping channel. Designed the Ask Jeeves Answer Point community forum from the ground up, art directing the brand development effort, defining navigation and typography and building HTML prototypes. Recruited, trained and led a Production Designer.
Contributed to usability and brand strengthening efforts across the org. Collected & analyzed statistical trends in the competitive market with respect to design, browser support, and page download speeds. Created online and print ad and promo materials ranging from animated banners to t-shirts and from sweepstakes to signage. Designed the “Ask” button for the Palm Pilot app, pixel by pixel. Founded the Ask Jeeves Lego Commonwealth, an “open-source” project with creations that lined the main hall at Ask Jeeves’ corporate headquarters.
Chief Technical Officer – Designed the startup’s first product, the “y3k Mall” web site. Created a site architecture roadmap and technology strategy. Participated in market research and R&D efforts, defining the target audience and researching ways to capture this audience through content and distribution partnerships and diversification of deliverance media.
DHTML Programmer – Programmed a JavaScript-intensive solution for Fox Entertainment’s FOXSports.com to demonstrate the potential for highly interactive content & experiences in the fledgling days of consumer broadband Internet access. Wrote reusable DHTML modules to provide advanced UI functionality under both Netscape Communicator and MSIE 4. Helped define technical architecture and milestone deliverables.
Site Builder – Worked on-site at Silicon Graphics, Inc., creating a e-commerce solution for the NT Visual Workstation product release. Built pages ranging from elementary HTML “shells” to a bleeding-edge DHTML widget. Worked extensively with client-side JavaScript. Integrated application server tags into JHTML pages, resolving application logic issues. Debugged inline Java code. Tested pages for cross-platform compatibility and resolved formatting issues. Participated in the training of two new Site Builders. Counseled design team on efficient page layout for the Web.
Lead Artist/Engineer – Independent contracting work including needs evaluation, graphic and web design, front-end programming, and marketing collateral development for corporate and academic organizations across the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
Technologies – XHTML, JavaScript, CSS, page development in Macromedia Dreamweaver and by hand. Comfortable in ASP, JSP, and PHP environments. Limited previous experience in VBScript, elementary Java, DOS-based C & C++, and Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications.
Graphics – Adobe Photoshop (3.5 through CS2), some vector-based illustration (Adobe Illustrator), and video editing in Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. Limited past experience with Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Fireworks, Caligari truSpace & POVRay (3D rendering).
